Where does the pain come from?

  • Osteoarthritis

Cartilage wear. It usually hurts when walking, climbing stairs or after sitting for a long time.

  • Meniscus

Pain along the joint line, sometimes with clicking or the knee locking.

  • Chondromalacia

Pain around or behind the kneecap.

  • Tendinitis

Pain in a specific spot that gets worse with effort (patellar or pes anserine).

  • Fluid on the knee

Swelling from fluid inside the joint.

  • Ligaments

A feeling of instability after a twist or a blow.

Depending on where it hurts

Front, around the kneecap
Chondromalacia, patellar tendinitis or kneecap osteoarthritis.
Inside
Medial meniscus, osteoarthritis or pes anserine tendinitis.
Outside
Lateral meniscus or iliotibial band.
Back
Baker's cyst, meniscus or ligaments.

In the assessment we confirm the cause with an examination and, if needed, with tests.

When to book an assessment

  • The pain does not go away or keeps coming back.
  • It limits your walking, climbing stairs or exercise.
  • The knee swells often or does not go down with rest.
  • It feels like something catches or the knee gives way.

How we work

How we assess it

Besides the knee, we look at your weight, your sleep and your activity, because they affect how it recovers.

  1. Video call assessment

We talk about where it hurts, since when and what makes it worse, and review any tests you already have. It is free.

  2. Tests, only if needed

If something is missing, we tell you what to get: an X-ray, ultrasound or MRI, depending on what we suspect.

  3. A plan for your knee

We explain your options and what each one costs. You decide whether to go ahead.

  4. Follow-up

We review how you are doing and adjust the plan.

Treatment options

Every knee is different. We start with the simplest options and adjust the plan as you respond.

  • Adjusting activity

Relative rest and avoiding what brings on the pain, without stopping moving.

  • Strengthening

Exercises for the thigh and hip, with physical therapy if needed.

  • Weight control

Every kilo less reduces the load on the knee when walking.

  • Medication

For pain or inflammation, only when prescribed by a doctor.

  • Injections

For example hyaluronic acid or corticosteroids, in selected cases.

  • Surgery

When there is a mechanical injury or advanced wear that does not respond. If that is your case, we tell you and refer you to the right specialist.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my knee hurt when I climb stairs?

Climbing stairs increases the load on the kneecap and cartilage. It is common with chondromalacia and osteoarthritis. If the pain does not go away, it is worth having it assessed.

Do I need an MRI?

Not always. It is ordered when a meniscus or ligament injury is suspected, or when the X-ray and the examination do not explain the pain.

What can be done about knee wear?

It is managed over the long term, and many people control their symptoms well and stay active with exercise, weight control and other measures. In the assessment we build the plan for your knee.

Can I exercise with knee pain?

Generally yes: the right exercise helps. Choose low-impact activities and guided strength exercises, and avoid whatever brings on the pain.

Am I a candidate for treatment?

That is what your free assessment is for: we review your case and your tests (if you don't have any, we tell you which ones to get) and explain which options make sense for you.

How much does it cost?

The first assessment is free. If you decide to go ahead with a treatment, we give you the full cost before starting, with no surprises.

Do I have to come to the office for the assessment?

No. The assessment is by video call, from home. If you decide to go ahead with a treatment, it is done at the office in Providencia, Guadalajara, by appointment.
