Longevity and anti-aging: what works and what has not been proven
There is no proven treatment that stops or reverses aging. What does have evidence are habits that increase years of healthy life and care that protects the skin.
Educational information prepared by Dr. Belinda Martínez, physician and surgeon. Last updated: October 3, 2026. It does not replace an assessment by a doctor.
What does have evidence
- Regular physical activity combining aerobic and strength exercise.
- A balanced, Mediterranean-style diet and maintaining a healthy weight.
- Getting enough sleep and treating sleep disorders.
- Not smoking and limiting alcohol.
- Controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose, with regular check-ups.
- Vaccination, social connections and caring for mental health.
Skin care and facial rejuvenation
The most important factor in skin aging is sun exposure. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, not smoking and good hydration are the foundation. Among the best-supported products are topical retinoids, prescription or over the counter. Dermatological and aesthetic procedures (laser, peels, fillers, botulinum toxin) have different levels of evidence and must be performed by trained professionals.
Products that promise to "rejuvenate" with exosomes, growth factors or peptides do not have comparable evidence.
Promises to view with caution
- Supplements, therapies or infusions that promise to "reverse biological age".
- Treatments without studies in people or with results advertised only through testimonials.
- Very high prices without an explanation of what is included or what evidence supports them.
- A lack of information about risks and conventional alternatives.
The biology of aging is an active field of research, and there are promising lines of work, but most do not yet have results that justify routine use.
When to see a doctor
Seek medical care soon if you have any of these signs:
- Changes in a mole (color, size, borders) or a skin lesion that does not heal.
- Unintentional weight loss, marked fatigue or memory changes that worry you or your family.
Frequently asked questions
What is biological age?
It is a concept that tries to measure how "aged" the body is using different markers. The available methods are not yet standardized or validated for making clinical decisions in practice.
Do anti-aging supplements work?
For most of them there is no solid evidence that they slow aging. Check with a doctor before taking them, because of possible side effects and interactions with medications.
What is the best anti-aging treatment?
The best supported are lifestyle habits, sunscreen and control of risk factors. Any additional procedure should be assessed with a professional.
